Map Command: Master Spatial Orientation
Skill Focus: Map Labeling & Directions | Target: Band 6-8 | Time: 25 minutes
Why Maps Intimidate (And Why They Shouldn’t)
Section 2 map questions cause panic for one reason: Students try to visualize instead of tracking systematically.
The Truth: Map questions are the MOST predictable in IELTS. They follow a strict formula:
- Clear directional language
- Sequential instructions (first → second → third)
- Physical landmarks as anchors
Your advantage: You can prepare the exact vocabulary and strategy in advance.

The Algerian Advantage: Street Navigation Skills
You already have an edge:
- Complex Urban Navigation: Navigating Algiers, Oran, or Constantine develops superior spatial awareness
- Multilingual Directions: You process directions in Arabic/Darija, French, and English daily
- Landmark-Based Thinking: Algerian directions use landmarks (“near the mosque”, “by the market”) just like IELTS
Cultural Translation:
- IELTS: “Adjacent to” = Algerian: “حدا” (ḥdā)
- IELTS: “Opposite” = Algerian: “قبالة” (qbāla)
- IELTS: “Between” = Algerian: “بين” (bayn)
Your Strategy: Pre-translate directional phrases into Darija during practice, then transition to instant English recognition.
Common Map Traps (And How to Avoid Them)
Trap 1: The False Start
What happens: Speaker describes a location, then says “But we’re not going there yet…”
Solution: Don’t label anything until you hear “This is the [building name]“
Trap 2: The Direction Reversal
What happens: “Turn left… actually, sorry, I meant right”
Solution: Use pencil, not pen. Cross out and update.
Trap 3: The Similar Names
What happens: “Main Hall” vs “Main Entrance” vs “Main Building”
Solution: Abbreviate clearly: MH, ME, MB
Trap 4: The Implied Location
What happens: “The restrooms are opposite the café we just passed”
Solution: Immediately label the café when first mentioned, even if not asked for.
Advanced Technique: The Mental Movie
Instead of looking at the map as a flat image:
- Imagine you’re standing there - Close your eyes for 2 seconds
- Feel the direction - When they say “turn left”, physically tilt your head left
- See the landmark - Visualize the building as you walk toward it
- Mark with confidence - Open your eyes and label immediately
This multisensory approach activates spatial memory and reduces errors.
