2. The Invisible Structure
In Band 7, we use “Firstly, Secondly.” At Band 9, these are “scaffolding” that must be removed. Your logic should be so strong that you don’t need to tell the reader you are moving to the next point.
Construct a Masterpiece
Assemble the Band 9 logical structure.
3. Lexical Precision: Tier 3
Band 9 is not about “obscure” words; it is about the exact word.
- Instead of “Bad effect” (Band 6): Use Pernicious influence, Malignant growth, Deletierious consequence.
- Instead of “Start” (Band 6): Use Inaugurate, Commmence, Instigate.
4. The Hypothetical Argument
Use complex modals to discuss things that might happen. This shows extreme grammatical control.
Structure: “Were the government to [verb], the immediate repercussions would be [X], yet the long-term benefits might prove [Y].”
Why it works: It uses the Inverted Second Conditional, which is a “Band 9 signal” to the examiner.
5. Stylistic Devices
These are the tools of professional writers.
- Parallelism: “The project failed not because of a lack of funding, but because of a lack of vision.” (Same grammar on both sides).
- The Rule of Three: “Our future depends on innovation, education, and collaboration.” (Rhythmic and persuasive).
6. Implicit Cohesion

7. Thesis Perfection
Your thesis should be a “Micro-Essay.”
Band 9 Thesis Example:
“While some argue that the preservation of minority languages is a futile endeavor in a globalized economy, I would contend that linguistic diversity is an essential component of human heritage, the loss of which would result in a profound cultural impoverishment.”
8. Band 9 Task 1: Macro-Synthesis
Don’t just describe the data. Theorize it.
- ”The data suggests a convergence of two previously disparate trends."
- "The graph reflects a paradigm shift in consumer behavior following the 2008 crisis.”
9. The “Master’s” Final Review Protocol
Final Polish
Unlock the checklist for 9.0 perfection.
