2. Tone Control: The “Chameleon” Strategy
A native speaker uses different “Englishes.”
Part 1: 'The digitalization of commerce is beneficial.' (Too formal)
Part 1: 'To be honest, I prefer shopping online because it's just so convenient.' (Appropriate informality)
- Part 1 (The Friend): Use contractions and colloquialisms.
- Part 3 (The Professor): Use formal, academic structures.
3. Cultural Swagger
Don’t apologize for your culture. Use it to show off your English.
Example: “In Algeria, there’s this concept of ‘Baraka’—it’s hard to translate, but it’s like a spiritual blessing in the everyday. I think that kind of mindset is essentially what keeps us resilient.”
Why it works: It shows you can handle Abstract Concepts that don’t have direct translations.

- Band 9 Response: “That’s a classic urban-rural dichotomy, isn’t it? From a sociological perspective, the city offers a melting pot of ideas, whereas the countryside provides a sense of continuity…“
7. Rhythm, Stress, & Intonation
English is a “music.” Band 9s have the Beat.
- Sentence Stress: Stress the new information in a sentence.
- Intonation: Use a “falling-rising” tone to show that you are about to add a “but.”
8. Seamless Repairs & Thinking Aloud
If you make a mistake, don’t stop. Glide through it.
- ”What I’m trying to articulate is…"
- "Or, to put it more precisely…"
- "Let me rephrase that for clarity…“
9. Topic-Specific Vocabulary (The Expert Tier)
- Sociology: Social cohesion, marginalized communities, paradigms, institutionalized.
- Environment: Biodiversity loss, ecological footprint, sustainable development goals.
- Psychology: Cognitive development, intrinsic motivation, emotional intelligence.
10. Final Mindset: The “Confident Expert”
Walk into the room like you are the one teaching the examiner. Not with arrogance, but with Authority.
- Body Language: Lean in slightly. Use your hands to “shape” your ideas.
- The “Ted” Promise: If you speak like a leader, the examiner will treat you like one. Band 9 isn’t just a score; it’s a statement of your future self.
