2. Vertical Reading (The Matrix Style)
Most people read linearly (Left-to-Right). This is slow. Band 8s read vertically.
Activate Vertical Vision
Practice the vertical scan technique to proceed.
3. Decoding Modals & Qualifiers
If the text says 'X might cause Y' and the question says 'X causes Y', the answer is:

4. Writer vs. Source Opinions
The test often asks: “What is the writer’s opinion?”
Identify the Source
Distinguish between the writer's view and a cited source.
5. Technical Vocabulary: Guessing 2.0
I don't know the word, so I panic.
I don't know the word, so I analyze its roots and context to guess its function.
At Band 8, you will see words that aren’t in any dictionary. They are technical jargon.
The “Etymological” Guess:
- Break the word down. “Photovoltaic” -> Photo (Light) + Voltaic (Electricity).
- Contextual Slicing: Look at the verbs around it. If the “idiosyncratic” machine “malfunctioned,” you know the word describes something specific or strange about that machine.

7. Yes/No/Not Given: Subtle Intent
The difference between NO and NOT GIVEN is razor-thin at Band 8.
Claim: Birds fly south. Text: Birds do not fly south. (Direct Contradiction)
Claim: The birds migrated because of the heat. Text: The birds migrated in the summer, which was exceptionally hot. (Correlation vs Causation)
- NO: The text provides evidence that directly contradicts the claim.
- NOT GIVEN: The text talks about the topic but does not confirm or deny this specific detail.
8. Analyzing Rhetorical Strategies
Why does a writer use a hypothetical scenario ('If X were to happen...')?

9. Extreme Speed Drills
- The 1-Minute Scan: Give yourself 60 seconds to find 10 specific names/numbers in Text 3.
- The Summary Sprint: Read a paragraph and write a 5-word summary in 10 seconds.
- The 15-Minute Test: Try to complete Text 1 (easiest) in exactly 12 minutes with 100% accuracy.
10. The “Zero Mistake” Audit
In your final 10 minutes:
- Check the S: Did you write “Student” when the text said “Students”?
- Re-read the “NOT”: Did you miss a negative word like unlikely or seldom?
- The Spelling Scan: Copying the word correctly is 50% of the battle.
Ted’s Final Tip: A Band 8 is about Stamina. Your brain will get tired at Text 3. Train your “mental muscle” by reading long articles in English every single day.
