1. The Speaking Mission
The Speaking test is a conversation, not an interrogation. The examiner is a human being. They want to hear you speak.
The Golden Rule: It is better to speak with mistakes than to be silent. If you stop talking, the examiner cannot give you marks. If you keep talking, even with some grammar errors, you can still get a Band 6.
2. The 4 Scoring Pillars
The examiner marks you on 4 things (25% each):
- Fluency & Coherence: Can you keep talking without long pauses? Do your ideas make sense?
- Lexical Resource (Vocab): Do you have enough words to talk about common topics? Can you explain a word if you forget it? (e.g., “The thing you use to cut grass” if you forget “lawnmower”).
- Grammatical Range: Do you use different tenses? (Past, Present, Future).
- Pronunciation: Can the examiner understand you? (You don’t need a British accent, just clarity!).
3. Part 1: The “Small Talk”
Time: 4-5 Minutes. Topics: Home, Work/Study, Hometown, Hobbies, Food, Weather.
This part is designed to make you comfortable. Think of it as meeting a new neighbor.
- Keep it simple.
- Keep it personal.
- Give 2-3 sentence answers.
4. The A.R.E.L Method
To get a Band 6, you must extend your answers. Use A.R.E.L.
- A - Answer: Direct answer to the question.
- R - Reason: Why? (Because…)
- E - Example: Give a specific detail.
- L - Link: (Optional) Connect back or wrap up.
Example:
- Question: “What is your favorite type of food?”
- A: “I would say my favorite is definitely traditional Algerian food, especially Couscous.”
- R: “This is because it reminds me of my family gatherings on Fridays.”
- E: “For instance, my mother makes it with lamb and vegetables every week.”
- L: “So, it is very special to me.”
5. Part 2: The “Long Turn” (2 Minutes)
This is where students panic. “What if I run out of ideas?”
The Speaking Mirror
Topic: Describe a topic
Describe a topic
- What it is
- Why it matters
- How you feel
The Strategy:
- Use the 1 Minute: Don’t just sit there. Write down keywords.
- Tell a Story: Don’t just answer the bullets. “I remember when…”
- Keep Talking: If you stop, the examiner thinks you have bad vocabulary. If the examiner stops you, it means you have good fluency!
6. The P.P.F. Strategy (Timeline Technique)
If you run out of things to say, use the Timeline.
- Past: Talk about the history of the topic. (“I first saw this three years ago…“)
- Present: Talk about the current situation. (“Nowadays, I use it every day…“)
- Future: Talk about your plans or hopes. (“In the future, I hope to show this to my children…“)
Example Topic: “Describe a book you enjoyed.”
- Past: “I remember buying this book at a small shop in Oran when I was a student.”
- Present: “At the moment, it sits on my desk and I re-read it sometimes.”
- Future: “I think that in ten years, this book will still be a classic.”
7. Part 3: The Deep Discussion
Time: 4-5 Minutes. This is the “Abstract” part. No more “I” or “My.” You must talk about Society and The World.
Common Question Types:
- Comparison: “How is life different now compared to 50 years ago?”
- Prediction: “Do you think robots will replace teachers?”
- Opinion: “Why do some people prefer to live in cities?”
Tip for Band 6: Use phrases like “In my society…”, “Many people believe…”, “On the other hand…“.
8. Pronunciation Clinic for Algerians
As an Algerian, you likely have a “French” or “Arabic” influence on your English. Here is how to fix common Band 6 blockers:
- The “TH” sound: Don’t say “Zis” or “Dis.” Put your tongue between your teeth for “This” and “That.”
- The “P” and “B” confusion: “Pasta” is not “Basta.” Practice blowing a small piece of paper with the letter ‘P’.
- The “V” and “F” sound: “Very” is not “Fery.”
- Word Stress: English is a rhythmic language. Don’t speak like a robot. Stress the important words (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives).
9. Fillers & Emergency Phrases
What if you get stuck? Use these to keep your “Fluency” score high.
To buy time:
- “That’s a very interesting question, let me think for a moment…"
- "I haven’t thought about that before, but I would say…"
- "To be honest, I’m not an expert on this, but in my opinion…”
If you forget a word:
- “I can’t remember the exact word, but it is a type of…"
- "What do you call it… the thing that…”
If you didn’t hear the question:
- “Could you repeat that, please?"
- "Sorry, I didn’t quite catch the last part.”
10. Ted’s 7-Day Speaking Routine
Practice this every day for 15 minutes:
- Day 1: Record yourself talking about your “Hometown” for 2 minutes. Listen and count your “umms” and “ahhs.”
- Day 2: Practice the “TH” sound in front of a mirror.
- Day 3: Take a random object (a pen, a bottle) and describe it for 2 minutes using P.P.F.
- Day 4: Watch a TikTok/YouTube video in English and repeat exactly what they say (Shadowing).
- Day 5: Practice Part 3 questions about “Education.” Use “On the one hand… On the other hand.”
- Day 6: Call a friend and speak ONLY English for 10 minutes. No Darija!
- Day 7: Do a full Mock Test with a timer.
