1. The Listening Mission
IELTS Listening is the same for Academic and General Training. It is divided into 4 parts, and it gets harder as you go.
The Golden Secret: You only need 23 correct answers out of 40 to get a Band 6. This means you can get 17 wrong and still win!
The Flow:
- Section 1: Social conversation (2 people).
- Section 2: Social monologue (1 person).
- Section 3: Educational discussion (2-4 people).
- Section 4: Academic lecture (1 person).
2. The “Psychic” Method
You are not just a listener; you are a mind reader. In the 30 seconds before each section, you must predict the answer.
How to Predict:
- Check the Word Limit: “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS.” If you write three, it’s wrong.
- Look for the “Word Class”: Is the gap a Noun? A Verb? A Number?
- Use Context: If the topic is “Booking a Hotel,” the gap for “Room type” is probably Single, Double, or Suite.
3. Section 1: The “Easy” Points
This is where you MUST get 10/10. It is usually about booking something or complaining about a service.
- Focus on: Names, Addresses, Phone Numbers, Dates.
- Names: If they spell it, write it. (S-M-Y-T-H-E).
- Addresses: Watch out for “Road,” “Street,” “Avenue.”
- Numbers: Double-check the 0. Some speakers say “Oh” instead of “Zero.”
4. Section 2: The Map & The Monologue
Usually a guide talking about a park, a museum, or a company.
The Map Strategy:
- Identify the “Start”: Where are you? (Usually “You are here” or the “Entrance”).
- Use Your Hands: Use your pencil to follow the speaker’s directions on the map.
- Vocabulary: Know your prepositions! (Opposite, adjacent to, north-west, behind, past the…)
5. Section 3: The Group Trap
This is the hardest part for many because 3 or 4 people are talking.
The Strategy:
- Identify the Speakers: Usually a student (John), another student (Mary), and a professor (Dr. Lee).
- Focus on Agreement: Do they agree or disagree?
- John: “I think we should use a graph.”
- Mary: “Actually, a table would be better.”
- Dr. Lee: “I agree with Mary.”
- The Answer is Table.
- Watch for Synonyms: They won’t say the same words that are on the paper.
6. Section 4: The Academic Marathon
One person talking for 5-6 minutes about a topic like “The History of Bridges” or “How Bees communicate.”
- Don’t stop: There is no “break” in the middle of Section 4.
- Follow the Signposts: Listen for words like “Firstly,” “Another point is,” “Furthermore,” “In conclusion.” These tell you which question they are on.
- Focus on Nouns: Most answers in Section 4 are concrete nouns.
7. The Number & Letter Masterclass
- Teen vs Ty: (15 vs 50). Listen for the stress. FIF-teen (high) vs FIF-ty (low).
- Double letters: “B-double O-K” (BOOK).
- Confusing letters: ‘J’ vs ‘G’, ‘A’ vs ‘E’ vs ‘I’.
- Postcodes: Usually a mix of letters and numbers (e.g., SW1A 1AA).
8. The Distractor Trap (The “Oops” Moment)
The speaker will often give the wrong answer first, then correct it.
Distractor Defender
Mission: Listen to the transcript (simulated). Avoid the traps. Click the correct answer only when you are sure.
Speaker:
Q: Select the correct option.
Always listen until the end of the sentence!
9. Spelling & Grammar Rules
- Singular or Plural: If the audio says “Books” and you write “Book,” you might lose the point. Listen for the ‘S’.
- Transfer Time: You get 10 minutes at the end to move your answers. Use this time to check your spelling.
- Capital Letters: You can write all your answers in CAPITAL LETTERS to avoid mistakes. (e.g., LONDON instead of London).
10. Ted’s 10-Day Immersive Routine
You need to train your ears.
